Typical symptoms

Night-time tingling often affects the thumb, index and middle fingers and the thumb-side half of the ring finger. Persistent numbness, reduced strength or muscle loss at the thumb base need prompt assessment.

How is the cause assessed?

An examination assesses sensation, strength and the affected fingers. Nerve conduction testing or ultrasound may be added when needed. The typical pattern alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Consider other causes

Not every numb hand has carpal tunnel syndrome. Other nerve compression problems can cause similar symptoms; the affected fingers and associated symptoms help guide clinical assessment.

Treatment options

Without surgery

A night splint that keeps the wrist straight can help. Depending on the findings, hand therapy, activity changes or a clinician-guided injection may be considered.

Surgical options

Progressive symptoms, persistent numbness or muscle weakness need specialist assessment. Surgery relieves pressure by releasing the ligament over the tunnel.

Suitable treatment depends on the confirmed diagnosis, examination findings and your individual needs.

When to seek an examination

Arrange an examination for recurring night-time tingling. Persistent numbness, reduced strength or muscle loss at the thumb base need prompt assessment.
